Our NHS services are under significant pressure...
People over 65 invited
Today on World Pneumonia Day (12 November 2024), NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough is encouraging anyone over 65 years old to make sure they’ve had their pneumococcal vaccine.
The vaccine helps protect against serious illnesses like pneumonia and meningitis. It's recommended for people at higher risk of these illnesses, such as adults aged 65 and over. GP practices usually contact people when they are eligible, but the local NHS is encouraging those who’ve been invited to make sure they take up their offer for the vaccine.
The pneumococcal vaccine helps protect against some types of bacterial infections that can cause serious illnesses like:
- meningitis (an infection in the brain and spinal cord)
- sepsis (a life-threatening reaction to an infection)
- pneumonia (an infection in the lungs).
It can also help protect against other illnesses such as sinusitis and ear infections.
Cali Makewell, Integrated Vaccination Service Lead with NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, said: “We understand life gets in the way and you might not have got around to having your pneumococcal vaccine, but you only need to have one dose of it once you are 65 or over, and then you’re protected. Contact your GP practice to book in before winter arrives.”
