Specialised services support people with a range of rare and complex conditions.
Specialised services are those provided in relatively few hospitals, accessed by comparatively small numbers of patients but with catchment populations of usually more than one million. These services tend to be located in specialised hospital trusts that can recruit a team of staff with the appropriate expertise and enable them to develop their skills.
These clinical commissioning policies underpin the commissioning of specialised services. They are important in clearly defining what NHS England expects to be in place for providers to offer evidence-based, safe and effective services and importantly, sets equitable access to services across the country.
