Practice Learning Awards

Brilliant NHS learners and teachers recognised through new awards

Local NHS learners and teachers came together in Cambridge recently to celebrate the first annual Practice Learning Awards, with circa 50 people in nursing, midwifery and Allied Health Professionals (AHP) shortlisted. 

Winners were presented with an award, with categories including Role Model, Innovation in Education, and the Future Leader award. 

The awards, organised by Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Integrated Care System (ICS), took place at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus as part of a day of innovation sharing, guest speakers and a career fair.

Dr Ade Tams, Director of Workforce at NHS Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, part of the ICS, said: “Congratulations to all those who were nominated and of course, our winners!”

“NHS learners and teachers do fantastic work every day to improve the health and care experiences of local people, by committing to developing themselves and others. We were thrilled to celebrate colleagues across the ICS for their dedication and commitment to local communities.”

The winners and awards include:

Award Category for Educators (Assessors / Supervisors / Educators/ those in link roles/ nominated person/ link lecturer/ education champions/ preceptor):

·       Role Model- An award to recognise an educator who shows exemplary characteristics, passion for teaching, and embodies core values whilst instilling them in others. Lucy Robertshaw, Occupational Therapist, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust

·       Practice Area - An award to recognise a practice area that is committed to and actively providing high quality, effective, learning environments for all students. Outpatient Department at Peterborough City Hospital, North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust

·       Exceptional Support- An award to recognise an educator who has gone above and beyond to support learners in whatever way necessary. This could be through education, guidance or even pastoral support. Christie Devon, Support Worker Educator/ Therapy Assistant Practitioner, North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust

·       Innovation in Education - An award to recognise an educator who has implemented new and exciting practices within teaching to improve the learning experience for students. Catherine Allison, Lead practice educator, Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust

Award category for Nursing, Midwifery & AHP Learners (Apprentice/ Student/IR/ fellowships/ internships/ CPD):

·       Peer Support - An award to recognise a learner who has gone above and beyond to include and support a peer alongside their own learning and development. Fleur Smith, Student Nurse Apprentice

·       Patient/ Service User Advocate- An award to recognise a learner who has gone above and beyond to support and champion the rights and needs of either an individual or a group of patients/ service users. Gurpreet Panacer, Speech and Language Therapist, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust

·       Excellence in Practice- An award to recognise a student who is excelling in their learning environment, delivering exceptional care, and consistently demonstrating core values and behaviours. Jacqueline Allen, General Practice Nurse and GPN Fellow, Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Training Hub

·       Future Chief Nurse /Midwife/ AHP/Leader award- An award to recognise a learner who shows all the leadership qualities (such as integrity, courage, respect, compassion, resilience) required to be a senior leader in the future. Raj Thirunageswaram, Head of Allied Health Professionals, North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust

·       Innovative Learner - An award to recognise a learner who has demonstrated ideas and methods that have, or have the potential to, significantly and positively impact practice and care. Charlotte Moore, Apprentice Physiotherapist, North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust

Practice learning involves various training opportunities to keep growing professionally, such as work placements, classes and online learning. It is supervised and structured to improve skills and knowledge and usually involves assessment of the learner.
