1766 - Cambridge's hospital opened thanks to the vision of Dr John Addenbrooke 

1873 - North Cambridgeshire Hospital, known as North Cambs Hospital, was opened in 1873 and was originally known as the Wisbech Cottage Hospital.

1884 - Creation of Brookfields Community Hospital on Mill Road in Cambridge, later renamed the Cambridge Borough Isolation Hospital and became Brookfields Hospital in 1947

1939 - The Princess of Wales Hospital in Ely first opens. At this stage it is an RAF hospital. It gained its Princess of Wales name in 1987 following a visit by Diana, Princess of Wales 

1948 – The National Health Service is founded as the first ever universal health system, available to all, free at the point of delivery

1962 – Stage 1 of new Addenbrooke’s Hospital opened by her Majesty the Queen on 28 May

1968 – Prof Roy Calne performs Europe’s first liver transplant at Addenbrooke’s

1986 – World’s first heart, lung and liver transplant is carried out at Royal Papworth Hospital, by their professor John Wallwork and Addenbrooke's-based Professor Sir Roy Calne

1988 - The Edith Cavell Hospital in Peterborough is opened by Her Majesty The Queen

1993 – Diana, Princess of Wales opens the new Respiratory Support and Sleep Centre (RSSC) at Royal Papworth Hospital

1993 – Peterborough District Hospital opens a dedicated coronary care unit

1994 – Royal Papworth Hospital opens Cystic Fibrosis centre

1995 – MRC Cambridge Centre for Brain Repair is opened by the Duke of Edinburgh on 14 June

2000 - 2018

2000 - Dental access centres opened, now run by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust

2001 - Self-referral for physiotherapy introduced, now run by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust

2005 – New Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) is opened in May, and a new birth unit officially opens at Rosie Hospital in June

2007 – Her Majesty the Queen opens the new Cancer Research UK Cambridge Research Institute Centre in February

2008 – Opening of the Institute of Metabolic Science in July

2008 – Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust is founded

2008 - Opening of the Oak Tree Centre - a multi organisational health and care facility in Huntingdon, serving some of the area's most deprived communities

2010 – Peterborough City Hospital opens to its first patients in November

2010 -  Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust is created as part of a drive to improve the quality of community services across the country

2012 – Official opening at Peterborough City Hospital by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in November

2013 – Her Majesty the Queen opens new Rosie Hospital

2013 - Ultrasound scanning to support patients using intrauterine devices was launched by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust

2014 - Launch of EPIC, CUH's electronic patient record, the first-of-its-kind transformation in an NHS Trust

2014 - Establishment of the Diana children's nursing team with Cambridgeshire Community Services (CCS), providing palliative care services for children

2015 – Surgical team at Royal Papworth Hospital carry out Europe’s first heart transplant using a non-beating heart

2016 - Cambridgeshire and Peterborough took part in the HPV vaccination pilot for men who have sex with men (MSM). This has since been introduced as a routine service by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust

2017 – North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust is formed. The Trust runs two hospitals in our area; Peterborough City Hospital and Hinchingbrooke Hospital

2017 - Online testing for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) was launched by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust

2017- A clinical trial is launched for Cytosponge, a 'sponge on a string' test developed by Professor Rebecca Fitzgerald to detect oesophageal cancer earlier

2018 – North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust launches time capsules at each of its hospital sites to celebrate the NHS’ 70th birthday – to be opened 65 years from now!

2019 – In May, Royal Papworth Hospital moved into a brand new, state-of-the art building on the Cambridge Biomedical Centre

2020 – In December, staff from Staploe Medical Centre delivered our area’s first COVID-19 vaccination in primary care

2020 - Creation of mental health support teams in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough schools

2020 – Royal Papworth Hospital works with Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London to deliver a world-first heart transplant programme using a new paediatric heart transplant technique, offering heart transplants to children aged 12-16

2021 – In March, Granta Medical Practices get their very first click and collect prescription machine – allowing people to get their prescription quickly and easily

2021 - The first international GP in our area completes the International GP Recruitment (IGPR) programme

2021 - The first large-scale COVID-19 vaccination centres in Cambridge and Peterborough were launched by Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust as part of the biggest vaccination programme in NHS history. More centres were subsequently rolled out

2022 – The Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Integrated Care System (ICS) is launched, a group of NHS providers, voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations, and local councils working together to improve local health and care

2023 – Peterborough City Hospital celebrates the 30th birthday of its dedicated coronary care unit
